3:34pm Several ebbs and flows in that innings. Pakistan began pretty well, keeping South Africa at bay in the first hour. But then, they crumbled in the second hour, losing four wickets. Rizwan and Ghulam rescued them, with the latter notching up a half-century that came off 52 balls, even if he did ride his luck a little. Those two, however, perished in quick succession, which opened the door for the hosts and they barged through, eventually bowling Pakistan out for 209, despite a nagging final-wicket stand.

Paterson was the most successful of the bowling bunch. Bosch, on Test debut, was not bad either and sent four batters back to the shed. Jansen picked up one right at the end, which meant Rabada was the only bowler to finish the innings wicket-less - a rather remarkable achievement given how beautifully he bowled. South Africa ahead at this stage, but if they are not careful, Pakistan could sting them on this surface and with their bowling attack. We will be back in about ten minutes for the second innings.

3:25pm Hello again, everyone. This Test is moving rather briskly and Pakistan's No.10 and 11 have done exceedingly well to frustrate South Africa, even if neither has been at their eye-catching best. The hosts will still feel confident with where they are placed, but Pakistan, by virtue of the 209 they already have on the board, will also reckon they have something to play with. Another intriguing session awaits, so let's get right into it!

Paterson and Bosch did wonders for South Africa, bowling superbly in partnership. Paterson claimed a fifer while Bosch is searching for his. Pakistan will rue some of the shots and brain-fade moments, but this is a tricky surface with some unpredictable bounce. Had they not lost Salman Ali Agha, who has been in stellar form, Pakistan would be in a much better position. That being said, they've put some runs on the board and have a potent pace attack to ruffle a few feathers. This little fightback from the tailenders will also lift the mood in the camp; it's always a good sign when tailenders are fighting and adding useful runs. Temba Bavuma would have ideally wanted his pacers to wrap things up within the extended allotted time, but they'll need to be patient and perhaps try some hostile yorkers to get the job done.
